ABOUT US

Latasha Headshot.jpeg

LATASHA TIFFAULT, FOUNDER

Hello, my name is Latasha Tiffault, and I am the founder of African-American Women of Indiana (AAWI). I have been a Registered Nurse for 24 years. I live in Westfield with my husband, Rock, and daughter, and we also have two grown children.

I am a passionate foodie who loves to cook, and I enjoy bringing people together. Additionally, I love to exercise.

One of my proudest achievements is raising my adult son as a single mother. This experience taught me a great deal about myself and shaped me into the person I am today.

I grew up in the Philadelphia area and moved to Indiana in 2015 after meeting my husband. When I first arrived, I didn't know anyone and had difficulty finding places to get my hair styled, my nails done, places of worship, and doctors.

In April 2021, I created a space where African-American women living in Indiana can network, support each other's businesses, and connect with one another.

Angela Bailey.jpeg

Angela Bailey

My name is Angela Bailey, I’m a mother of three boys with multiple career hats. I joined AAWI to find like-minded women who also wanted to expose their children to a positive environment, positive experiences, and people that will help them grow in confidence and social skills.  AAWI introduced my sons and I to live theater at Beef & Boards, African dancing with IIBADA, and boat sailing with Youth Empowered. We’ve developed genuine friendships with many of the families in the organization. Since joining AAWI I have become a Co-Chair with Dhawana Laing for the Kids and Family Event committee, it has been very rewarding creating events to bring families and friends together.

Dhawana Laing-Brown

Joining AAWI has been a transformative experience for me, providing a valuable connection to Indiana’s African American community. Through AAWI, I have had the pleasure of meeting remarkable women who have become cherished friends and trusted confidants. Together, we have embarked on adventures across Indianapolis, forging bonds that have turned into a supportive personal advisory board as we journey through life and craft lasting memories.

As someone who relocated to Indiana, AAWI has been the cornerstone of building a nurturing village for my husband, Reynard Brown, and our two sons, RJ and Rich. Collaborating with Angie Bailey, the Co-Chair of the Family and Friends Committee, I have had the opportunity to spearhead diverse events that enrich our community and celebrate our collective spirit.

BEHIND THE LOGO

Sylvia Watson

I am an independent real estate broker, attorney, and mother to three kids and a feline fur-baby. I dabble in photography, painting, and graphic design to exercise my creative spirit.  I enjoy AAWI because the group brings women together; we lift each other up, support each other's businesses, and have a good time together. I have met so many lovely women and had many fun new experiences I might not have ever heard about or tried by myself.

I was excited to enter the logo competition with my entry that represents the various shades of the ladies in the group. The woman is looking up, representing strength, hope, determination, and resilience; characteristics I have noticed in the women I have met as they have shared their stories. Her hair is kinky, representing most of us before we relax, press, braid or lock our tresses. I designed her to be as inclusive and representative as possible of the lovely ladies in the group and I am honored that my logo was chosen to represent the group.
